After a long, cold winter and a dreary spring, a lot of us are planning our summer vacations. So, I thought this was the perfect time to highlight some new travel websites.

Price of Travel is a fairly new site with a "database of travel costs in every major destination around the world." Links to prices for the "top five cities" are at the top of the homepage; today's cities are Amsterdam, Buenos Aires, London, New York and Paris. Their 3-star European Traveler Index for 2011 compares the 40 most popular tourist cities by an "upscale set of standards that should help people plan trips and create budgets." Their Index uses a "fixed set of typical expenses that every traveler will encounter, and applies them to each of the 40 major European tourist cities." It compares costs for hotel rooms, three meals a day, taxi rides, one cultural attraction per day and three beers (or wine) each day. Their homepage features lots of interesting articles ranging from "What it costs to stay in 11 of the world's most famous luxury hotels" to "11 cheapest overwater bungalow resorts in the world." If you're traveling to Asia, you'll also find great articles and useful tips.

Most of us plan our trips months in advance, but if you're retired or have a flexible schedule, you can often find great bargains. Lastminute.com offers weekend savings of up to 70% for flights, hotels, and cars. Travel is restricted to Wednesday through Sunday. From the homepage, you can choose your departure city and the region you wish to travel to, or be flexible and leave your destination open to find the most bargains. Click on the depart and return dropdown menus for exact dates, "this weekend" or "next weekend." International destinations include Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, Mexico and South America. Sign up for their newsletters.

Perhaps you prefer renting a condo or apartment for your vacation. Lickety Trip, "helps you find last minute deals on vacation rentals." Most rentals are in the U.S., but you can also find over a thousand places in Europe and hundreds more in the Caribbean, Asia, Mexico, etc. Just click on the state or country you want to travel to and then on the city, island, etc. You'll see a picture of each rental and can click on the link for details (some include the price, for others you have to contact the owner) and a link to the owner's email address.
